The role of VP of Software Development is to plan, coordinate, and supervise all activities related to the design, development, and implementation of projects and technology initiatives. This role is also responsible for maintaining, supporting, and upgrading existing systems and applications. This role is a member of the technology Leadership Team. We support a high-volume healthcare data system that is accessed through multiple web portals. This high- volume system operates out of multiple data centers and must reliably be available to its clients 7x24x365.






  • Manage and plan deployment of development resources, plan and schedule releases, and train/cross-train other members of the team
  • Manage development projects
  • Responsible for managing all development process, such as iteration management, quality control, or user experience
  • Applies proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of best practices to guide the development team on issues related to the design, development, and deployment of mission-critical information and software systems
  • Oversee teams that develop code, understand/influence/ mentor/enforce coding standards and best practices
  • Provide strategic leadership for Application Development
  • Ensure a strong customer service focus across the Application Development function
  • Foster and demonstrate thought leadership in improving Application Development function
  • Build a reliable network of vendor partners, both onshore and offshore and utilize vendor partners to optimize Application Development services
  • Ensure Application Development initiatives deliver on expectations—functionality, timeliness, and cost
  • Bring innovative best practice to all areas of IT, with emphasis on application development
  • Develops relevant metrics for Application Development function and use metrics as basis for communication and continuous improvement
  • Define strategic staffing plans based on projected demand making use of external vendor partner capacity where applicable


  • Translates strategies into current and future action plans
  • Determines, evaluates and modifies plans to meet both current and future needs
  • Addresses business issues which are beyond immediate needs
  • Handles work situations which deal regularly with future business issues
  • Synthesizes many perspectives or conflicting ideas
  • Manages resources (people, budgets, technology)
  • Manage vendors in accordance with the Corporate vendor management program requirements



    • Partners with customers on new requirements, production issues and on creative problem solving

  • Manages complex internal/external customer relationships for long-term value
  • Keeps abreast of new technology and market developments


Talent Development:

  • Encourages and facilitates the development of a significant knowledge base in others
  • Plans performance measurements and measures KPIs to meet organizational goals
  • Gives both negative and positive feedback




Education & Experience:


To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience
      • Preferred Majors: Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or a closely related field
    • Minimum 10+ years of software development experience
    • Minimum 10+ years of technical and people leadership experience
    • Minimum 12+ years of leadership experience at large complex organizations, including leading centralized and/or matrixed teams
    • Experience as a people manager
    • Experience in the Healthcare Industry
  • Preferred:

Master’s or Another Advanced Business Degree

  • A thorough and practical understanding of how software applications, modules, features, and functionality are designed for implementation
  • A thorough and practical understanding of how software applications and frameworks are created, designed, implemented, re-factored, tested, deployed and supported for the entire lifecycle of the application
  • A thorough and practical understanding of how to design database objects, such as schemas, tables, and other associated database objects, such as indexes, or constraints in the support of implementing new software applications and features
  • A thorough and practical understanding of the application ecosystem in which a software application is deployed
  • General understanding of role-relevant issues and trends
  • Proven ability to manage people, projects, budgets, administrative tasks, and cost
  • Seasoned experience in a process or a technology leadership role or expert level depth in technical field
  • Able to use newly acquired expertise to make a strategic impact on processes and business

    • Technical understanding with ability to communicate technical impact, technical solutions, root cause and corrective actions into business concepts or layman’s terms
    • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to create and manage others executing a project plan
    • Ability to meet deadlines, to conduct and direct research into technology issues and products, and to take initiative in the development and completion of projects.
    • Excellent problem-solving, analytical and evaluative skills

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, facilitation) with strong presentation and facilitation skills at all levels in the organization (from individual contributor to executive level)

  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential
