It was founded as the American Society of Tool Engineers in 1932 and eventually evolved to Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 1969 until it settled with a simpler name, SME, in 2013. The manufacturing industry is the backbone of an industrial society. SME supports organizations, professionals, companies, educators, schools and communities by sharing knowledge and resources with the aim of developing a skilled workforce for the manufacturing industry.

SME's Contributions

1964 - The organization held the first ever Western Metal and Tool Exposition and Conference in Los Angeles and was attended by over 25,000 participants.

1972 - SME Board of Directors launched their Manufacturing Engineers Certification Program. More than 1,500 manufacturing engineers were approved and certified during this time.

1976 - Manufacturing Engineering® Magazine made its initial debut as the official publication concerned with the American Manufacturing Industry.

1979 - The SME Education Foundation was formed to act as a catalyst in providing financial and technical support to a broad range of educational institutions.

1986 - The charter class of SME Fellows, all 97 of them are made up of previous International Honor Award recipients, were inducted.

1991 - RP&M Conference & Exposition was unveiled. This event came to be known as the RAPID + TCT focusing on 3D printing, scanning and additive manufacturing.

2010 - SME acquired Tooling U (Tooling University, LLC) to expand training outreach.

2011 - The Foundation established its Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education (PRIME) program. It provides a comprehensive, community-based approach to manufacturing education with strong partnerships among organizations, businesses and exemplary schools.

2019 - SME launched the MT (Manufacturing Technology) Series with the goal of strategically connecting decision makers from vast industries with the premier suppliers of advanced manufacturing technology, equipment and tooling.

2020 - SME Education Foundation received $6M from the State of Michigan to fund programs aimed at advancing STEM careers through SME PRIME initiatives.
