NEW YORK'S FINEST

The firm now known as CURTIS, MALLET-PREVOST, COLT & MOSLE LLP was forged by time.

Founded in the 1820s in New York City, it was initially named as J.L. Graham and J.L. Graham by cousins John and James Lorimer Graham. Come 1838, the firm admitted another partner in the person of William Curtis Noyes - the son of a state Supreme Court justice. The firm's name was changed to Graham, Noyes & Wood. William Curtis Noyes, a seasoned lawyer of his time, played a critical role in codifying New York State’s laws which still has an impact to today's policies. By 1897, new partners meld with the firm. Harris D. Colt was made a name partner and later that same year was joined by Severo Mallet-Prevost, a Mexican born, U.S.-educated lawyer. By 1925, Henry Mosle stepped in as the new and last named partner, resulting to the firm's current name: Curtis, Mallet-Provost, Colt & Mosle LLP.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • $2.5Million Class Action Lawsuit for Titanic PassengersThen Partner Frederic K. Seward, Sr. (great nephew of Secretary of State William Seward) represented TITANIC's Economy-class passengers after the unfortunate April 1912 sinking -- PRO BONO. This case became an estimated US$2.5 million class action lawsuit against the operator of Tinanic, White Start Line.

  • Voided Preposterous Land Rights Claim: Peralta Grant - Named Partner Mallet-Prevost won a landmark case against a preposterous rights claim over territories covering much of present-day New Mexico and Arizona. In March 1883, James Addison Reavis, a Civil War deserter, filed the petition by submitting Spanish-language documentation which claimed his rights over the land in question. Reavis' defense lies on the validity of title by way of marriage. The latter married a young woman who claimed her maiden name was Peralta, a clan that was related to a conquistador who had been awarded the massive land grant from the Spanish monarchy. Mallet-Prevost, a native Spanish speaker, saw through the linguistic errors in the presented documents; and therefore proved in court that all of Reavis' claim were just an elaborate hoax. The Peralta Grant was voided.
